Mining Engineer in Bulk Handling Systems

Case Description:

A mining engineer with an expertise in bulk handling systems was needed for a breach of contract case in the coal mining industry. At issue was damage to a mine caused when the vertical conveyor system reversed direction due to the weight of its load and collapsed. The vertical conveyor belt system, or VBS, was designed and constructed with failsafes to prevent such an occurrence but the mechanical backstops failed.

IMS ExpertServices was asked to locate a mining engineer with expert knowledge of bulk handling systems for mining operations, specifically conveyor built systems. The expert was requested to perform a forensic failure analysis and opine as the cause of the bulk handling system's collapse. Specifically, the expert was needed to address the issues of the mechanical backstops for the vertical conveyor belt system.
