Surgical Device Expert in Hand Assisted Laparoscopic Surgery

Case Description:

A surgical device expert was sought for patent infringement litigation between surgical access device manufacturers. Both manufacturers distributed competing surgical devices for minimally invasive surgeries, specifically for laparoscopic surgeries. At issue were engineering aspects of the surgical device claimed by the patents.

IMS ExpertServices was asked to locate surgical device experts with a background in biomedical engineering and significant experience in design and use of surgical devices specific to Hand Assisted Laparoscopic Surgery (HALS).

Experts Presented:

  • Biomedical Manufacturing

This biomedical manufacturing expert has extensive experience in the surgical device industry. As a medical device engineer, he is associated with a biomedical manufacturer whose mission is to develop and sell proprietary and nonproprietary surgical medical devices. The company sells a wide variety of products primarily for minimally invasive surgical procedures. Specifically, the expert develops instruments, equipment, and surgical supplies used in hand-assisted laparoscopic surgery (HALS). He has managed the development and market introduction of more than 20 surgical devices.IMS Reference #5009795

  • Hand Assisted Laparoscopy

This hand assisted laparoscopy expert is a board certified general surgeon and fellow of the American College of surgeons. He has contributed multiple publications on new techniques in surgery. He specializes in minimally invasive surgery and regularly instructs other physicians in these advanced procedures in the operating room as a proctor and as a conference speaker. He helped pioneer Hand Assisted Laparoscopy as a new form of minimally invasive surgery. He is also a co-inventor and patent holder for a surgical access device for use in hand assisted laparoscopy.IMS Reference #5009797

  • Biomedical Engineering

This biomedical engineering expert is a professor of biomedical engineering. She designed a surgical device which serves as a rudimentary prototype of a hand-assisted laparoscopic surgical trainer. This allows even the largest of operations to be performed laparoscopically so that patients requiring these operations can also experience the benefits of minimally invasive surgery. She has more than 15 years of experience in surgical device development including customer needs assessment, usability studies, and performance verification. She has specialized skills in design research, industrial design, usability testing, and human factors evaluation of surgical devices.IMS Reference #5009803
