5G wireless networking is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated technological advancements in recent years.
Innovations and novel commercial and industrial solutions related to 5G roll-out will result in new business opportunities. They are likely to also bring disruption to existing businesses, and intellectual property disputes.
To gain greater insight into how these disruptions and opportunities could effect the commercial litigation community, IMS interviewed Robert Dezmelyk, IMS Elite Expert in wireless communications. He offered his insights on the impact of the next generation of wireless technology.
IMS: Who will experience the greatest disruption (or opportunity) with the advancement of 5G?
DEZMELYK: The effects of 5G wireless networking technology will be concentrated in urban and suburban areas, since the underlying technology used to increase the data rate depends on a dense network of base station antennas. Thus, the adoption and benefits of 5G technology are likely to be experienced unevenly across the country, resulting in new opportunities for other technologies in rural areas—possibly slowing the adoption of some products that rely on 5G technology.
IMS: What is a benefit of this new generation of wireless tech?
DEZMELYK: One of the primary benefits of 5G wireless technology will be the reduction of network latency times. 5G designers have a goal of 1 millisecond latency; that is the period of time that it takes for a data packet to be transferred across the network—which is dramatically faster than the latency times of existing cellular networks.
IMS: What should commercial litigators prepare for as 5G adoption increases?
DEZMELYK: The new applications enabled by 5G technology will bring together a number of technology areas including Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, IoT sensors, and large-scale datasets with real time computing. When that many technologies come together, intellectual property disputes are likely to occur between competitors innovating in the market space.
